In 1990 Dr Hoe was awarded a HMDP fellowship by the Singapore Government to train in Breast and General Oncology under Professor Irving Taylor of the University Department of Surgery, Southampton, in the United Kingdom. There he acquired significant practical and theoretical knowledge in all aspects of General and Cancer Surgeries, as well as gaining research experience in the area of Breast Cancers.
Upon his return to Singapore, Dr Hoe was appointed a Consultant Surgeon of the Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital (SGH). His busy practice there included all aspects of general surgery including breast, thyroid, laparoscopic surgery (especially gallbladder surgery), appendicectomies, inguinal hernia mesh repairs, abdominal surgeries for intestinal obstructions and intestinal cancers and surgeries for common anal diseases such as piles, fistulas and fissures.
At the time, as a result of both personal interest and his training in the UK, Dr Hoe had already developed a sub-specialty interest in the management of all Breast Diseases and problems, including Breast Cancer. Upon his return from the UK, he helped develop the first Breast Clinic in Singapore General Hospital (SGH), and started the first Breast Care Unit in Singapore. He also recommended the appointment and training of Singapore’s first Breast Care Nurse, Sister Saraswathi, as he recognized the need for the physical rehabilitation and emotional counseling of breast cancer patients during the entire course of their treatment, both before and after surgery. |
